What is EEPROM?
Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) is a type of non-volatile memory used to store small amounts of data that will be kept even when the device is unpowered. Unlike traditional ROM (read-only memory), EEPROM can be electrically erased and reprogrammed, byte by byte. This means they are not as fast for writing data as other types of memory chip, such as flash memory, but they are ideal for updating small amounts of data relatively frequently. This makes it a flexible and widely used type of memory for many applications, including aerospace, defence, industrial and commercial systems.
Why are EEPROMs important?
Unlike other memory types, EEPROM chips keep their data even when unpowered, which makes them ideal for critical applications where data integrity is vital, but power is not continuous. The EEPROM was developed to solve the problem of needing UV light for erasing data. Unlike UVEPROM, EEPROM can be updated in situ, without needing to remove or access the microchip, making it straightforward to update the stored data.
