What is UVEPROM?
UVEPROM (Ultraviolet Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory), is a type of non-volatile memory that stores data even when a component is unpowered. The primary difference between UVEPROM and EEPROM is the quartz window in the package lid, which allows the chip to be erased using ultraviolet light. UVEPROM is now, mostly, a legacy style of memory chip which in the past was important within embedded systems for storing data such as firmware, lookup tables, operating code, and other data that needs to be reliably stored for the long term. This chip style has largely been replaced with EEPROM, where the data can be erased using electric voltage rather than using UV light.
Why are UVEPROMs important?
UVEPROMs were built into many aerospace, defence and industrial systems in the past. At the time, a major benefit of using UVEPROM is the ability to retain data even when unpowered, making them highly reliable over extended periods of time. They can also be reprogrammed multiple times. As many systems using UVEPROM remain in service for decades, this legacy chip type is still needed. Effective maintenance and long-term support of older aerospace, defence, and industrial systems often hinge on access to UVEPROM, a critical but often overlooked component.
